Definition

Sense 1

Fire aimed directly at a visible target.

"The section engaged the enemy position with direct fire from 200 metres."
Sense 2

Fire delivered at a target that is visible to the firer.

"Direct fire from the tank destroyed the enemy machine gun position."

How This Term Is Used

This is standard operational vocabulary that appears across situation reports, briefings, and orders. Candidates preparing for STANAG 6001 should be able to both recognise this term when listening or reading, and use it accurately in their own written reports and spoken responses.
