Definition
Sense 1
Fire delivered at a target that is not directly visible, using calculated trajectories.
"Artillery provides indirect fire support to ground troops."
Sense 2
Fire delivered at an angle that the weapon cannot be aimed directly.
"The platoon was suppressed by accurate indirect fire throughout the assault."
How This Term Is Used
This is standard operational vocabulary that appears across situation reports, briefings, and orders. Candidates preparing for STANAG 6001 should be able to both recognise this term when listening or reading, and use it accurately in their own written reports and spoken responses.
