Independent training programme. These are not official STANAG 6001 tests. STANAG PRO is a supplementary preparation programme for the STANAG 6001 examination — it is not official and is not part of any official STANAG testing channel, NATO body, or national testing authority. All materials are original practice content.
Why most candidates fail
Most soldiers do not fail STANAG 6001 because their English is weak. They fail because they train with general English courses and outdated PDFs that do not match the real exam — wrong task types, wrong scoring focus, no timed practice under exam conditions.
STANAG PRO fixes exactly this. Every one of the 450+ tasks is built around the actual exam format and scoring criteria — task completion, organisation, range, accuracy — with instant AI evaluation on writing and speaking. This is exam training, not a general English course.

Why STANAG PRO Exists
STANAG PRO exists to help candidates actually prepare for the STANAG 6001 exam — not just improve general English. Generic courses and outdated materials do not train the specific task types, timing, and scoring criteria the real exam uses. This platform is built entirely around that format, level by level, across all four skills.
This is an independent training platform. It is not an official STANAG 6001 website and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to NATO, any national armed force, or any official testing authority. All practice materials are original content built to prepare candidates for the official exam.

What is STANAG 6001?
NATO Standardization Agreement 6001

The NATO language proficiency standard

STANAG 6001 is the NATO Standardization Agreement that defines language proficiency levels for military personnel across all member and partner nations. Your result is expressed as a Standardized Language Profile (SLP) — four digits scoring Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing, e.g. SLP 3232. NATO posts, international courses and deployments specify a required SLP; promotion boards in many nations award points for certified levels.

The six proficiency levels

LevelNameWhat it means
0No proficiencyNo practical ability.
0+MemorizedOnly memorized phrases; no spontaneous production.
1SurvivalSimple everyday and routine military matters: directions, basic orders, short notes.
1+Survival PlusAbove Level 1 but inconsistent — some functional-level performance mixed with survival-level gaps.
2FunctionalThe most commonly required level. Concrete work topics: reports, briefings, routine correspondence, factual conversation.
2+Functional PlusAbove Level 2 but not consistently at Level 3 — good work-topic control, occasional gaps in abstract argument.
3ProfessionalAbstract argument, professional nuance, extended discourse — staff officer and NATO HQ level.
4ExpertNear-native professional fluency.
5Native/BilingualEducated native speaker.

A "+" (e.g. 2+) means performance substantially above the base level but not consistently at the next one.

Exam format — the four skills

Reading — timed comprehension of military and general texts: notices, reports, directives, argumentative articles.
Listening — recorded dialogues, briefings and announcements, usually played twice.
Writing — typically a semi-formal email/letter, a military report, and (Level 3) an argumentative essay.
Speaking — a structured interview: introductions, situational role-play, briefings and opinion discussion.

Exact administration varies by national testing centre — same descriptors, same levels, NATO-wide.

How each level is scored — practical guidance

The exam measures whether you accomplish the communication task at the required level. Knowing the scoring criteria is as important as knowing English.

Level 1 — Survival
Scoring focus: handling routine exchanges — times, places, simple instructions — with answers the listener can follow.
Training tip: one accurate short sentence scores better than three confused ones.
Level 2 — Functional
Scoring focus: factual accuracy and logical order in work topics — reports, procedures, past events. Minor slips are tolerated when the message is clear.
Training tip: drill a fixed report skeleton (what – when – where – action – result) until automatic.
Level 3 — Professional
Scoring focus: building an argument — position, evidence, counter-position — while keeping grammatical control.
Training tip: rehearse claim → reason → example → concession; visible structure is rewarded.

STANAG PRO's AI evaluation applies these same dimensions — task completion, organisation, range and accuracy — to every Writing and Speaking submission.
