Definition

A system of coordinates used to identify a specific location on a military map.

"The IED was discovered at grid reference BN 4521."

How This Term Is Used

This is standard operational vocabulary that appears across situation reports, briefings, and orders. Candidates preparing for STANAG 6001 should be able to both recognise this term when listening or reading, and use it accurately in their own written reports and spoken responses.
