Sense 1
A possible plan or option available to a commander.
"The staff presented three courses of action for the commander to consider."
Sense 2
A possible plan for accomplishing a mission; abbreviated COA.
"Three courses of action were briefed to the commander."
How This Term Is Used
This is standard operational vocabulary that appears across situation reports, briefings, and orders. Candidates preparing for STANAG 6001 should be able to both recognise this term when listening or reading, and use it accurately in their own written reports and spoken responses.
