Definition

Sense 1

A clear expression of what the commander wants to achieve and how.

"All soldiers must understand the commander's intent before the operation."
Sense 2

A clear statement of the purpose of an operation and the desired end state.

"Understanding the commander's intent allowed the platoon to act independently."

How This Term Is Used

This is standard operational vocabulary that appears across situation reports, briefings, and orders. Candidates preparing for STANAG 6001 should be able to both recognise this term when listening or reading, and use it accurately in their own written reports and spoken responses.
