Definition

Unintended damage or casualties to civilian property or personnel.

"The strike was called off due to risk of collateral damage in the village."

How This Term Is Used

This is standard operational vocabulary that appears across situation reports, briefings, and orders. Candidates preparing for STANAG 6001 should be able to both recognise this term when listening or reading, and use it accurately in their own written reports and spoken responses.
