Definition

Sense 1

The area beyond the area of operations that may affect current or future operations.

"Intelligence was collected throughout the area of interest for planning purposes."
Sense 2

The area of concern to the commander for current and future operations.

"The commander expanded the area of interest to include the border region."

How This Term Is Used

This is standard operational vocabulary that appears across situation reports, briefings, and orders. Candidates preparing for STANAG 6001 should be able to both recognise this term when listening or reading, and use it accurately in their own written reports and spoken responses.
