Level 0 on the STANAG 6001 scale means no practical ability in the language - a candidate cannot yet handle even the simplest routine exchange in English. It is rarely a target level; it is the starting point that any assigned officer or NCO with an English requirement needs to move beyond.
A Level 0 profile indicates the candidate cannot reliably understand or produce basic English - no functional reading, listening, writing, or speaking ability for even simple, predictable situations. There is no meaningful STANAG exam outcome at this stage; the priority is foundational language learning, not exam practice.
Candidates at Level 0 should not begin with exam-format practice. The priority is basic vocabulary, sentence structure, and simple comprehension - general English fundamentals - before STANAG-specific preparation becomes useful. Attempting timed, military-format tests at this stage is discouraging and inefficient.
Level 0+ (Memorized Proficiency) is the first meaningful checkpoint: the ability to produce memorized phrases and very basic fixed expressions, without yet being able to respond flexibly to unpredictable questions. Reaching 0+ typically means basic greetings, numbers, simple directions, and fixed military phrases are secure.
STANAG PRO is built for candidates already working toward Level 1 and above - its 450+ tasks assume basic English foundations are in place. Candidates starting from Level 0 are best served by general foundational English study first, then STANAG PRO\'s free placement test to confirm readiness and build a personalised 8-week plan from Level 1 onward.
